| There is a long-running tradition in the village of Aldbourne, a tradition that has been running for over 100 years. Aldbourne Band, formed in the mid-1800’s, has been playing a series on concerts called the Pond Concerts throughout every summer of the last century. The four Pond Concerts are played on the first Sunday evening of each of the summer months June (5th), July (3rd), August (7th) and September (4th). The first three months’ concert commences at 7.15 and the September concert at 6.45. The Pond Concerts are very popular, attracting hundreds of visitors to Aldbourne and the concerts are staged as relaxed, entertaining and, more importantly, Free. The Aldbourne Pond is in a beautiful setting in the centre of the Village. The Pond, according to Wiltshire folklore, was the scene for the famous Moonrakers incident. Legend has it that the Moonrakers managed to convince the officers of the law that they were simple country folk by attempting to literally rake the moon off the surface of the pond. What the law officers failed to notice was the kegs of contraband alcohol underneath the surface of the water! The Village is also blessed with a picturesque village green, a magnificent church and plenty of period buildings and architecture to peruse. For those of you wishing to indulge in some of the more social aspects there is a handful of good pubs serving food and liquid refreshments. There is space for deckchairs around the pond and in the square, and many of our ardent supporters arrive mid-late afternoon to enjoy the peace and beauty of the setting and to ensure ‘pole-position’ for the evening’s music. The Band commences in a rather more relaxed style than it’s other concert engagements and the commentary from M.D. Mr Nigel Seaman is always, well, entertaining. The concerts also provide an opportunity for individuals to perform solo’s, duets and feature items and whether the Band plays marches, jazz, broadway shows or ballads, this is pure entertainment. So if you have a spare first-Sunday evening please feel free to come down to Aldbourne Pond for an evening to remember.
